A bad pen is, essentially, disposable within a day. It gets thrown away. A good pen gets kept, lent to friends and family and then, months down the line, it runs out of ink. Yes, the price difference between a bad pen and a good one can be as little as a few cents but the consequences are absolute. If you are evaluating a number of samples of pen then it’s worth writing a full page rather than just making a few random squiggles. You’ll very quickly notice if any of them skip.
The ink and the pen’s mechanism are what define the feel of the product. Oil-based ballpoints are the most reliable and resistant to slow drying. In comparison, gel-based pens are smooth to write with and produce darker lines, but tend to dry faster. The feel of a rollerball pen on paper is perhaps the best, but it does tend to bleed through very thin papers.
Barrel material creates the first point of perceived value. Plastic mass is the primary vessel for promotional pens, but bamboo or wood creates instant sustainable grounds for issue, whilst metal creates the grounds for a higher end gift with the heavy barrel creating the greatest portion of perceived value.
Pad printing is ideal for decoration of printed plastic barrels, whereas laser engraving is perfect for printed metal and bamboo items as the laser will expose the material underneath and it will not wear off in your hand.
