Another point for consideration is the fabric weight of the tote, which will affect how it is used. Cotton canvas bags are usually measured in ounces (e.g. 5oz cotton canvas tote bag) and can be of a light weight or very heavy weight fabric. Whilst the 5oz cotton canvas tote bag is perfect for a conference, the 12oz cotton canvas tote bag is used for years to come to do weekly shopping for example. Therefore, if you see cheap totes, they are probably of a very thin weight and therefore will fail at the handle seam very quickly.
The handles are another potential point of failure. The handles should be stitched into the side seam of the bag and then reinforced with a box stitch or an X-box at the join to the bag. A simple tacking to the face of the panel will not be sufficient for the life of the bag.
For the backpacks the padding on the shoulder straps as well as the laptop sleeve dimensions will be used most. A sleeve that does not fit a 16 inch machine will most likely not be used in a modern office.
Drawstrings are the volume giveaway: cheap, packable, and fine for a one-day event, but nobody expects them to last, so do not spend on decoration there. The sustainable lineup sits in the eco-friendly range, and insulated carriers under coolers.
